Notes
I hand-scrubbed a ton of LOUD annoying nearby claps from S1T3(73 claps), S1T4(34), S1T5(19), S1T7(43), S1T8(6), S2T2(51), S2T3(5), S2T6(10), S2T8 (10), S2T15(4)
I also used a spectrum analyzer and parametric EQ to tamp down a few piercingly loud yells from one guy in S1T4(6 yells), S1T5(1), S2T2(5), S2T5(1), S2T6(1), S2T9(1), S2T15(1)
Col. Bruce Hampton - vocals, hollow body electric guitar, 1 cymbol
Dr. Dan Matrazzo - keyboards, vocals, snare drum (with brushes)
Paul McCandless - oboe, bass clarinet, pennywhistle, saxophones
Taper notes:
On the heels of some recent Col. Bruce postings I've made, BARN126 is indeed a rare Col. Bruce configuration. Coming just a few months after he left the Aquarium Rescue Unit (and after I'd already seen the new Bruce-less ARU and been horribly disappointed by them) Col. Bruce popped in for a show at Wetlands with a new project called The Fiji Mariners. This show was extremely lightly attended and featured 2 sets of what was basically a duo -- Col. Bruce on a big hollow-bodied electric guitar (not his trademark "chazoid" electric mando-guitar hybrid) and Dr. Dan Matrazzo on keys and harmony vocals. Both Col. Bruce and Dr. Dan played a little bit of percussion too -- if I recall correctly, Dan had a single snare drum and Col. Bruce had a single ride cymbal. Special guest Paul McCandless (from the group "Oregon", who I'd also wind up seeing play as one of the fill-in Flecktones when they were trying out different people to fill out their lineup in 1995) added color on all sorts of wind and reed instruments.
I wasn't sure what I expected out of this new band, but it was nothing like the heavy blues-rock of the Aquarium Rescue Unit. This was a lot more jazzy and out-there music -- even though you fans of the ARU and any subsequent Col. Bruce projects will recognize the bulk of the material -- "Basically Frightened", "Yield Not To Temptation", "Fixin' To Die", "Shoeless Joe", "Time Is Free", "Compared To What?", and "Cheese Frog". Still there was some new material here ("Fiji" is a particular standout, and there are a couple of instrumentals that I can't identify) and some interesting other material -- hearing Col. Bruce sing "You Are My Sunshine", "The Stars Fell On Alabama", Bobby "Blue" Bland's "There Ain't Nothing You Can Do", Sun Ra's "Outer Spaceways, Incorporated", "Michael Row The Boat Ashore", and "Yesterday" are all pretty incredible. Additionally, there is no other guitar player for Col. Bruce to lean on, so you really get to hear his unique style of playing front and center in this show (check out what he does on "Basically Frightened" for a good example of his style). There is also some major Col. Bruce eccentricity on display here -- check out Set 2 Track 11 for some of this, where I can't really explain in words exactly what was going on here....
This lineup (w/o Paul McCandless, who was just a special guest here) eventually became a "real" band, with Col. Bruce and Dr. Dan adding a drummer and bassist (I've got one more recording of this band that I will release) for a couple of years before breaking up and Col. Bruce came back with his next project "The Code Talkers".
Mastering-wise this was one of those tougher projects, as it was a small band with no bass or drums, so it was relatively quiet in the room. Which meant that loud claps and yells and whoops (all of which there were lots of) easily overpowered the music. I did a lot of work to smooth out these issues and now the show is extremely listenable and sounds very intimate. It came out pretty excellent considering the $300 stereo microphone I was using at the time.
Enjoy!
Scott
